Melanie had posted recently about peach pie at Duarte's, and that it was back to being as it should be after a disappointing sample prior to that...Well, I am not a peach pie fan, but I do LOVE olallieberry, and am thus very pleased to report that when we stopped in at Duarte's this evening for an early dinner after a Saturday coastal drive, that it was very much up to expectations...indeed, it exceeded hubby's expectations: he pronounced the best piece of pie he had eaten in years! :-)
They also have a special right now of prime rib, with swiss chard and baked potato, for $16, and it was excellent: very flavorable and generous cut of meat, great price, and when you ask for it rare, they actually bring it rare. Also have Hog Island oysters, $1.50 each.
but the pie was the star: which led to an amusing interchange with our server: she came up just as we were 'discussing' the proper pronunciation of Olallieberry (heck, I doubt if I am even spelling it right :-)) and all she heard was hubby saying: 'ask the waitress, I bet she'll know if you are pronouncing it wrong..." So of course the waitress assumed we were discussing the restaurant name and immediately chimed in to tell us, "It's 'DEW-arts"...:-)
I knew that, but I did learn something new there today: they take reservations, which I never realized since I go there infrequently and treat it as the road house it really should be and is. But good to know: we had no problem getting seated right away at a table for two at 5 p.m., but a half hour later and we might have been eating at the counter...
