oishi recommendations

so we all know that oishi is a bit of a chowhound darling. i was just hoping to get some recommendations for dinner tonight, since i don't make it out there as often as i'd like to.

on previous visits, i've tried a few appetizers - off-hand i can remember the new-style sashimi (of nobu fame or something similar, i guess) and the baby hamachi with hot pepper. a few designer rolls (white tiger maki, tokyo-style maki, another with a woman's name in it), though i usually get greedy with sashimi and can't eat much of anything else. (oishi's hamachi, by the way, is by far the best i've had here - but even that pales next to their baby hamachi and white tuna.)

so are there any particularly memorable items i should try? i'm taking a friend who loves those wacky maki combinations, so any recommendations would be awesome. appetizers too - the last time i went i was looking at the tuna tata with cilantro and golden caviar and a couple of eel things on their specials board. but i also need to try more of their cooked items. how is their bana (seared) sushi? their hamachi kama? and while i'm not the biggest maki fan, i am swayed by a good handroll. i tried and swooned over the spicy scallop - what else is good?

and one more question, please - where do you all go for omakase around here (besides clio)? there's been surprisingly little discussion about that on this board, though i remember someone being sadly disappointed with his omakase experience at oishi. i want to treat a friend to omakase for his birthday, and of course, i want it to be really good.
