Oil-packed capers

Yesterday, I was trying to make a puttanesca, and I realized that I had somehow bought oil-packed capers. I had never heard of oil-packed capers, and when I tried them, they lacked all flavor and were just mushy and oily. I did not use them in my pasta, but it got me wondering - does anyone know of a good use for oil-packed capers, and are they common?
