Ode to Chicken Kitchen

Covert Ops | Jun 14, 2002 12:06 AM

OK, it's midnight, deadline's done, and it's time for major preggo cravings to kick in.

I WANT CHOP CHOP!!!!

Those of you in the Miami know Chicken Kitchen, formerly known as Starr's Chicken. My favorite location is on Red Road just past Sunset Drive, but there are several in the Miami area and on the beach.

If you've never been, it's a very simple concept -- small whole chickens (look almost like game hens) grilled in front of your eyes on a massive grill by very unfriendly people. A VERY unfriendly looking person will "chop chop" the chicken with a huge cleaver, and serve breast meat cubes over yellow rice. The preferred sauce is called mustard curry, which is neither mustard nor curry. (Actually, it's kinda sweet in a perfectly savory way, not spicy at all.)

This is the OFFICIAL dorm food of University of Miami students, as I was told my first week at school. Within the first month I had memorized their phone number, and never forgot it in four years. (Still even remember it now! If only they'd deliver to Melbourne!) But don't think of it as college-kid food like you would Ramen -- it's actually really REALLY good, comfort food at its best, arroz con pollo with a major twist.

Come, fellow hounds, and join me in singing the praises of Chop Chop (as we called the place even if you were crazy enough to order something different). And let's pray they branch out to Orlando so I have even a CHANCE of getting some. :-)
