Had RW lunch at Oceana this afternoon and came away disappointed. I had never been to this long time well known seafood place and thought that here was a good opportunity to try it.
Bread was so so, but it was warm and selection of three to choose from. Apps consisted of salmon mousse which was described as gravlax on the menu and scallops with blood orange. The gravlax was awful and I did not finish it. The scallops were too well done and on the rubbery side. Entrees were the redfish with potatoes and calamari stuffed with lamb sausage with a side of watercress. The redfish was so well done that my friend commented that it tasted worse than tuna fish. I did not even finish my taste of it, since it was terrible. The calamari was fine, nothing special. We both had the chocolate cake with oatmeal stout ice cream and toffee. Not too good either. Cake was too dense for my taste and the toffee was warm and too frothy. Chocolate syrup tasted like Hershey’s out of a bottle.
Service was fine and the restaurant’s décor was somewhat dated and old, but I would not care if the food were better. Well been there done that and never again for a New York classic that I had never tried. Too bad, I had expected better. I have been to Le Bernadin and did not love it, but thought that this would at least be comparable.
