Ocean Grill on Columbus/78th St. review

Four of us had dinner at Ocean Grill on Columbus and 78th St. Even though I live in the neighbourhood, I hadn’t been there is a couple years. Now I remember why. The space is very pretty, although on the noisy side. The food is so-so, although nothing, other than the lobster bisque was really good. But the service was really mediocre. When 3 people at the table order soup, you would think having spoons available would be a good idea? It took two requests to get them. Sushi came without soy sauce or a dish for it. The waiter described the special as blackened salmon. Everyone heard it. When I ordered it, the waiter asked if I meant the blackened swordfish? I guess I did. Getting water took pleading. But once we got it, the waiter filled the glasses up each time we took a sip. Advice on wine was sad. The waiter didn’t figure out that he spilled soy all over the table and on one person when he took the dishes away. When was the last time the lighting in a restaurant went from comfortably dim to really bright – and stayed that way for 10 minutes -- in the middle of the evening? OK – the waiter must have been new and inexperienced, but the busboys seemed pretty clueless too. The shrimp spring rolls tasted like, well, nothing. The crispy calamari & spicy tuna rolls were soggy. The swordfish tasted only like the black beans it came with. The John Dory was really salty. Once scallop tasted over cooked, another undercooked. B-r-guest has a great reputation – so I thought – but it must not be because of Ocean Grille. Too bad – those outside tables look really nice.
