Ocean Delight, San Jose

Melanie Wong | Dec 19, 2004 03:09 AM

Saturday afternoon under sunny clear blue skies, Uncle Calvin was laid to rest. Afterwards at the wake, 100+ mourners shared some of his favorite dishes at Ocean Delight in San Jose.

Mixed seafood soup – light flavor, dense with chunks of fresh scallop and surimi

Peking duck with lotus buns – two ways with skin served separately from bones and meat, excellent flavor, tender meat, but skin turned soft

Stir-fry of scallops, chicken and long beans – delicious, aromatic with wok breath, lovely textural contrast of buttery soft scallops and snappy crisp beans

Walnut prawns – very nice version with big prawns and plenty of crunchy candied walnuts

Salt and pepper pork chop – well-seasoned with an abundance of fresh chilis, but slightly overcooked and toughened

Gai lan with oyster sauce – beautifully fresh and perfectly poached

Dungeness crab with ginger and scallions – on the small size, not cracked

Clear steamed whole flounder – the best dish, sweet white flesh needed a little tugging to pull back from the bone
