We went on Monday for dinner. My wife had an old friend in from Tokyo and she wanted something a bit more upscale with a fairly broad menu to choose from.
I know that OAS is connected to the Water Grill downtown, and that worries me. While I have not been to the WG, I would like to go. Yet when I look at what OAS serves, and how much they charge, and knowing that the WG will be more I am a bit gun shy about the connection and how similar they may be in terms of quality.
The best thing that we ordered were the lobster taquitos, which they have had on their menu at OAS as long as I can remember. I had a beet salad with goat cheese that was nothing more than OK, in fact the cheese seemed a little old and tired to me.
I tried the striped bass from Virginia, which was fine but not exceptional. My wife had the crab cakes which I thought were downright bad. Tough exterior, too much breading with the crab and just not a prime example of the genre at all. Her friend had the surf and turf which I did not taste, but he seemed to have liked the lobster tail and left most of the filet.
Along with one creme brulee, two miller lite beers, one bloody mary, one cosmo and one glass of wine the tab came to $169 with tax, plus tip.
I realize that the WG is going to be better. I just don't know how much better. Any opinions on the qualitative differences between the two place will be read with interest.
Ocean Ave. Seafood is on the south east corner of Ocean and Santa Monica Blvd. across the street from Palisades Park, just a short walk from 3rd St. Promenade.
