oatmeal frittatta at Hugo's

So I had to meet a friend for lunch in Studio City and, complying with my stipulation of "ABJ" (Anything But Jerry's), he suggested Hugo's. I'd never been. The service, which hovered on the cusp between surly and hostile, was actually a blessing in disguise because the waiter refused to ask the kitchen if they could make the Huevos Mexicanos without chicken, which was what I originally wanted, so I had to hurry and order something else. I ordered the aforementioned Oatmeal Frittatta because it sounded so gross, I was actually intrigued. I was expecting the worst, so imagine my surprise and delight when a beautiful, puffy, brown, piping hot disc garnished with strawberries, applesauce, and cottage cheese was placed in front of me. IT WAS DELICIOUS! It looked fried, but was not the least bit greasy. The steel-cut oats gave it texture and it had the same lovely spongy consistency of a really good, pancake-style matzo brie, with just a bit of crispiness around the edges. With a little salt, it perfectly offset the sweetness of the applesauce, and the cottage cheese was a nice, slightly creamy accompaniment. Something really wonderful and different...I can't wait to go back and have it again!
