Thirteen lucky hounds got together to re-start our Oakland Chowdown lunch series, with another big, long, tasty lunch at Seoul House in downtown Oakland.
Dishes sampled by the group, mostly from the dinner menu, include the following:
spicy rice cakes
Dak Bul Go Ki (bbq chicken in Teriyaki sauce)
Bul Go Ki (bbq beef)
Deep fried prawns and vegetables
Gob chang jun gol (Tripe with vegetables in house special sauce)
Soon tofu Ji gae (Tofu stew with beef, clams and vegetables)
cold sobu noodles with egg and beef
hot noodles (sorry, didn't catch the name or details of this one)
Total cost per person with tax and tip: $13.00
To the hounds: If I left anything out, please chime in!
I will let others chime in on their opinions as well, but just to start the discussion:
I must say, I went into this lunch without high expectations. I am not a big fan of Korean food to begin with (mostly because I don't know that much about it), hadn't heard much about Seoul House, but had never thought it looked particularly welcoming when I've walked by...However: I was very pleasantly surprised! The food was quite good, the service was very friendly, accomodating and efficient, we got a lot to eat for our $13 and lunch would be even less if one didn't go all out as we did...SoI will be adding this to my regular rotation of workday lunch spots near the office. To me, this is the biggest attraction of the Oakland lunchtime Chowdowns: I get a chance to try places that I otherwise would have passed by....
Well, then there is the other advantage: the company, which was great, as always! We had a nice mix of new and 'old' faces, and it was fun to see the good turnout after our hiatus from doing these lunches...Indeed, your Oakland lunchtime series organizers promise that it won't be so long before we meet again: look for the announcement of our next lunch very soon (perhaps even the week of the Chowdown picnic, just to get us in the mood...)
And if you aren't on the Oakland workday Chowdown series evite list, drop me an email and I will see that you are added to it...
A big thank you to Marc and Lillian with the help organizing the lunch (and we missed you Marc!) and also a big thank you to Marlon for the terrific job ordering!
So, what did the rest of you think?
