Oakland Chinatown Bakeries continued.....

I stopped in Chinatown on the way home from work yesterday to pick up a few items for dessert. Remembered someone had posted about the very good egg custard tarts at Napolean Super Bakery so I stopped there to buy a few and I got some of their coconut tarts as well. Just to compare, I also bought the same two items at Ruby King Bakery just a block away. The coconut tarts are 50 cents @ at both places. The egg custard tarts are still 3 for a dollar at Ruby King while they are 50 cents each at Napolean. Egg custard tarts: the pastry at Ruby King is flakier - the filling might be a bit tender at Napolean but I'm not absolutely sure - it's a virtual toss up - tried more than one and I need to do more research : ~ ) Given the bargain pricing I'd still stick with Ruby King. The coconut tarts at Napolean are more moist but ever so slightly more substantial - leaning toward a very light pound cake consistency but still with a good coconut taste. The Ruby King version is lighter....think I prefer the Ruby King version but the Napolean one might hold up better if you can't consume it right away (it's moist)

Napolean Bakery has a dizzying selection of savory pastries - including items such as fish & cheese....the baked BBQ Pork buns looked good....much to try on future visits.
