I spent many of my formative years in Kailua, but that's going back (eek!) decades. We're having a family reunion of sorts in Waimanalo in a few weeks and I could use some advice vz. food resources on the windward side of the island.
First--anyone have a recommendation for good markets (we're all foodies and would just as soon cook in as eat out, unless out means something spectacular)? I know there's a Safeway in Kailua, but is there anything closer or better? Is there a good FoodLand anwhere except Ala Moana, or is that chain still around? Any tips on the best place to buy fish?
Second--any eating out tips for Waimanalo-Hawaii Kai-Kailua-Kaneohe? Cheap's good, but expensive's OK, too. We are quite adventurous, so pretty much anything goes! We have family members who have malasadas and saimin on their minds, so tips in that regard would be especially welcome.
