I am heading to Oahu (Waikiki beach) with two fellow Chicago chow lovers. We are graduate students (going to a conference) so are looking for inexpensive ways to sample authentic food. I am thinking about hole-in-the-wall establishments making good use of fresh local ingredients like seafood. Also any local cuisine, or that of large immigrant groups like Chinese, Japanese or Thai. Are there any dishes we should absolutely sample ?
We will be staying in Waikiki beach but are willing to use public transportation to get to the good chow. We will rent a car for a couple of days, so suggestions of not to miss places elsewhere in Oahu are welcome.
Finally we plan to go to some other island for a couple of days. We like to hike and check out nature. Renting an inexpensive cabin in a natural reserve would be ideal. Suggestions as to where this sort of dream might be realized are very welcome !
Your chow suggestions will be very useful to us. Thank you !
