Nyum Bai, the tiny Cambodian restaurant opened last year in Fruitvale and has been earning accolades from the get-go. 'hounds have been following La Cocina alum, Nite Yun, from her early pop-up days. But my first taste of her cooking was in April.

With a morning appointment in Oakland, I figured I'd just drive over for lunch. Not quite that simple. Twenty-three minutes to find a parking space 4 blocks away ... but worth the effort to visit Nyum Bai.

I ordered the Kuy Teav Cha with pork, $14. The generous portion of thin rice noodles was stir fried with bits of pork and rough cuts of cabbage in a savory-sweet sauce. A squeeze of lime and a taste of both hot sauces for some contrast, plus the fried egg and crushed peanuts to stir in made each bite taste a little different.

The serving size was too much for a lunch meal, and I did find myself wishing that a smaller plate for less money were available instead of packing leftovers. But then it dawned on me that Chef portions these dishes for sharing. So, bring a friend or two, make it a social occasion and sample more dishes.

Known for long wait times for tables, guess I lucked out walking in immediately as a solo diner at 1pm on a weekday. Once seated, my gracious server helped me navigate the menu and was in no hurry to rush me out. Lovely experience all-round.
