I went to Nyonya, a Malaysian restaurant located on Grand St (btwn Mott & Mulberry) on Saturday night and had a fantastic dinner. Inspired by Andrew Zimmern's show (Bizarre Eats) to find an oyster omelete, we headed to Nyonya. We arrived at about 9:00 and waited for 10 minutes for a table for two people. The oyster omelete was amazing! It was served with a sweet chili sauce and was a good size appetizer. We also had the Roti Canai appetizer, which was terrific. For our mains we had the Braised Duck with Lotus Seed, as well as the Beef Rendang (beef simmered w. exotic spices (cinnamon, cloves)). The braised duck, which we just a shot in the dark for us, was incredibly tender and delicious. I also learned that I love that lotus seeds! The beef was decent, although I feel sorry for any dish sitting next to the duck. Only complaint is that they charge for rice. It's not expensive at all, I just generally expect that rice comes with certain types of asian dishes. Overall, I cannot wait to return to Nyonya - it was fantastic. Also, for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, large group-friendly place, I noticed that had several large tables set up to accomodate such parties. Finally, note that the restaurant is cash-only.
