Wow, what a weekend. Rolled into Le Bernadins minutes after France beat Brazil. A very happy restaurant staff. I had the fluke tasting (every bit as good as reported here), the sea urchin custard (sublime custard perfectly sparked with sea salt) and the baked lobster with bourbon and black pepper sauce. The lobster will forever change my notions on how to cook lobster, but how I will ever get it barely cooked like they do without under-cooking, I do not know. The best lobster I've ever tasted. For dessert, a yummy little chocolate cake with the malted rum ice cream. Nice dessert, but not mind-blowing. I preferred my wife's cherry dessert but it was a little skimpy on the cherries.
She had the tuna with foie gras, soft crab with lump crabmeat, and the black bass. She loved them all, especially the first and the last. Possibly the best meal we've ever had and the sommelier steered me to a quite inexpensive half bottle of chablis which was excellent (my wife doesn't drink). Service was impeccable.
We went to Norma's for brunch the next day. I had the berry brioche french toast. Delicious and impossible to finish although I gave it my best. She had the mandarin french toast, way too heavy, the toast appeared to be pound cake.
For dinner, we went to New Green Bo. the crab and pork dumplings and the scallion pancakes were transcendent, the chicken in wine sauce, mock chicken and crispy duck were quite good but paled in comparison. Dessert was almond cookie ice cream from the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Very tasty.
A great weekend except, at Shining City Saturday, the woman directly in front of us in the second row talked repeatedly, occasionally unwrapping hard candies and crunching them. I kept waiting for the actors to stop and reprimand her. The next day we caught the Faith Healer and the guy behind us spent the first act unwrapping and crunching hard candies. Luckily, we were in the mezzanine for this one. For the second act, he had a big bag of crunchy cookies. When the rustling went on for over a minute, I turned around and lowly implored "Please!". He had his hand in the bottom of the bag, scavenging for the last couple crumbs. When the lights came up, he looked at his companion and said "Those cookies were good!". I refrained from asking him what kind they were. Is it possible to be too much of a chowhound?
A great weekend of eating and theater. Thanks for all your help. I'd never even heard of Le Bernadins (let alone New Green Bo) until I started checking this board out.
