My NYC FOODventure update - the last 5 years!

alanadancer | May 16, 201610:15 AM

So, I have always come to Chow for advice. A thoughtful hound suggested I update the community before coming back for more advice. I live in Santa Barbara, Ca, and my husband and I take an annual pilgrimage to NYC to eat and explore the city. Here goes...

We have visited these fine dining pillars. Daniel
Per Se
Jean Georges (lunch)
Momofuku Ko (lunch)
EMP note: I went the first time to dine solo (bucket list- fine dining solo in NYC). Found out I was pregnant after made reservation. Of course they were accommodating to my dietary changes, but by the time I was in NY, I was in a death grip of morning sickness. I made it into t 3 amuses and the ‘clam bake’ before needing to depart. They were so lovely and Cedric and the management have been so wonderful trying to get us in since. We still have not been able to get our schedules to sync, but next visit for sure.

Favorite- Per Se and Ko. I prefer innovative food, and these were sublime, artistic, and the service was refined but also relaxed enough that I felt comfortable.

My NYC food Highlight Reel
Casa Mono - Razor Clams
KyoYa- Tofu Martini (random, but it has stayed with me 5 years later)
El Posto Aconto - Cheaper than its fine neighbor. Housemade fettucinin with SB uni was a nice trip home with a twist
Prune – What they say is true. Radishes and butter and bone marrow are simple and incredible!
Ippudo – Love the vibe, love the food. Still delivers amazing and consistent food with crowds and hype.
Momofuku Ssam – Great spot. Innovative food and in some ways liked this better than Ko ($500 less!). My fav of the DC empire
Café Habana – shop, stroll and get a Cubano and corn. I like the to go option around the corner – Best to eat on a stoop over dining in.
Balthazar- Trendy and classic at the same time. It is not the most life changing food, but it is an NY experience.
Numero 28 Pizza- West Village (Cash only) wood burning oven, all incredible. I loved the anchovie caper pie
Rubirosa- Another amazing spot for pizza. Why we love pizza in NY.
Roccos – I love this place… cannolis made to order and awesome stop when strolling Bleeker or to take to go to the Washington Square Park
Toqueville – Elegant experience akin to the big guns listed at the top- I loved this place and the food and service were intimate and special
Russ and Daughters – bagels lox and bliss.
Katz- don’t return every visit, but everyone must go at least once!!

Pegu Club
Raines Law Room
Death & Co
Spotted Pig- food good too… I hear
Eataly rooftop

Tried and pass.. Tried em, but not my favorites
Little Owl
Grimaldis pizza
Bar Boloud – apps only – so difficult to judge
