NYC chowhound in Broward - report

JackS | Nov 4, 2004 05:10 PM

I went to Broward County to work for John Kerry this past week. Oh well, I least I ate some good food. Highlights:

1. On the recommendation of this board, I went to Tom Jenkins on Route 1 south of Davie Blvd. Really good BBQ - got the pork spare ribs, nice tangy sauce. Collard greens were OK, I've had better. Mac n' cheese was terrific.

2. Around the Lauderhill Mall there are a ton of West Indian restaurants. I tried two: the jerk machine (Jamaican) and Joy's Roti (Trinidadian). I live in Brooklyn, so I feel like I have a bit of authority in judging this cuisine, and they were both quite good. I got jerk pork in Jerk Machine, which for some reason I can't seem to find in NYC. It was good, sauce had a nice kick to it, with sides of rice and peas and cabbage. At Joy's Roti I got a veggie roti. The bread was terrific, and the spicy sauce was awesome. The fillings were a little heavy on the potato-ey side, but what are you gonna do.

3. Went to Trina's on A1A around Terramar Blvd. for brunch. Nothing special, but decent. Eggs benedict were pretty good, French toast served its purposes, and a bloody Mary that did not suck (but was not the best).

4. Went to Shuck N' Dive on 650 N. Federal Highway (#1). Had the oyster/shrimp po' boy. Unfortunately, I was not impressed. Not bad, but really nothing special about the sandwich.
