My second night in New York, I spent the night out of the rain at Hearth. Just to prepare you, this is a glowing review.
Hearth was exactly what I wanted it to be. It was warm and friendly and bustling with energy. It was constantly full but you never felt squeezed in, and the atmosphere was relaxed and casual, but you still knew you were in for a special treat.
I am sure our waitress was dispointed that we weren't ordering wine, but she never really showed it. We started with a great little celery soup from the chef. Then we both had the nantucket bay scallops, which I highly recommend. They were so small and sweet and just melted in your mouth and wonderfully seasoned.
Four our main courses I had the rabbit paperadelle and my date had the Salmon. Both dishes were cooked perfectly and the proportions were just right, not too much not too little. The food showed a lot of care and experience by the chef. Nothing was too flashy or over flavored. We also had a side of the gnocchi, which we both loved. It was covered in pepper and course salt and was one of those great comfort dishs that you just can't stop eating.
I loved dessert here. I am a dessert fanatic and I think that Hearth defintely deserves praise. We had heard the apple cider donuts were great but neither of us felt let them, so I had the bannana cake and my date had the chocolate tarte. Both were amazing. The bannana cake was layered with marscapone and slices of bannanas and accompanied by an amazing dark choclate gelato. My date's tarte had thick gooey chocolate in a perfect little tarte crust. And came with a peanut brittle ice cream which I kept stealing bites of. I also had a great cappacino.
I know perfect seems like it must be an overstatement, but I really can't find anything wrong with this restuarant. It is just the place to go if you want amazing food in a warm, comfortable environment that seems to automatically generate good converstaion and laughter. I will be back!
