NY Times on the Magnolia Bakery clones

xavier | Apr 18, 2004 10:29 PM

Fun article, with facts like how Buttercup owner (and Magnolia co-founder) tries to keep people from knocking off here success:

"And she's not taking any chances that any Buttercup knockoffs will pop up. The managers of her store are required to sign a noncompetition clause, and her lawyer, Evan Cowit, says he is "actively seeking" stores that he feels might "risk confusion" with the "décor, layout, and product presentation" of Buttercup. The recipes themselves, he says, are not "trade secrets" and thus not protected in the same way because Ms. Appel and Ms. Torey published them in a 1999 cookbook."
