NY Style Tri-Color Cakes

David A. | Apr 7, 2003 02:28 PM

I am curious about those tri-color cakes that you see in so many delis and bakeries in New York. They are little square cake slices -- three layers, each a different color, usually red, yellow, and green -- sometimes glued with rasberry jam -- usually scented with almond extract -- coated in chocolate. You know what I'm talking about?

Do these have a proper name? Where do they come from? Are they Italian?

Thanks,
David A.
