A recent visit to Nunzio's on Hylan Blvd. rounded out our Staten Island pizza research. Our small pizza tasting committee noted that it rates near the top, along with Lee's Tavern. Other contenders include the venerable Denino's, Joe and Pat's and the less enjoyable Goodfella's. This is not to begin a debate in these quarters (although several of us agreed that, per square mile, Staten Island may have the best pizza in the city) but rather to report that last Friday night marked the last pizza served at Nunzio's for some time, while the owners bulldoze the building and completely renovate the site. The woman there said to try back at the beginning of February ("February 1st," she said, "but call before you come.").
