One of the few bright points of the slow painful death of Landmark Mall in Alexandria is that whatever TGIBennigan's was there finally closed, and the space was cheap enough to be leased by a local restaurant instead--Weyone Sports Bar, which is owned by the same folks who own the Weyone grocery in Van Dorn Station down the street. I stopped by a couple of weeks ago, and was suprised to discover that while they do have your typical pub fare, they also have a fairly extensive menu of Jamaican and West African (I believe Sierra Leonean) dishes as well.
I tried the jerk chicken, and it was actually quite good: the chicken was perfectly cooked and moist, and the jerk rub had some good depth of flavor while also having some good heat; it also came with an acceptable salad and a few perfectly cooked plantains that did a good job of cutting the burn from the jerk rub.
I also tried some of their "Weyone wings", which were not nearly as good--still surprisingly well cooked for bar food, but they were breaded wings (I prefer the unbreaded style used for Buffalo wings) and they were served with a side of a pretty bland mango salsa. (They also offer Thai wings and jerk wings, and have 25c wings and 35c shrimp on I believe Mondays and Thursdays.)
(Also: the service is a little flaky: not horrible, but the staff--or at least the hostess/waitress, who was the only person I saw--is clearly not composed of restaurant professionals, so little details seemed to fall by the wayside. Then again, she was at least trying, which is more than I can say for some "professionals" I've been waited on by...)
I didn't get a chance to try any of the West African dishes (they've got crain-crain, sour-sour, foo-foo, jollof, etc.), but I'll probably be in the area again in another week or two so I'll probably check out one of those dishes and report back.
