Nosher Rye Deli in Allendale (Bergen County)

zhelder | Dec 10, 201001:15 PM

A new kosher/Jewish-style deli (sorry, they're not officially kosher) opened up in the newly yuppified Allendale shopping center. (Why'd they take out the McDonalds? I guess for most people in Allendale, "fast food" means making the personal chef cook more quickly.)

But anyway, back to Nosher Rye. Based on my initial visit, this place is a winner.

I tried a pastrami sandwich and some matzo ball soup for lunch today. The sandwich was big, and the meat was excellent quality. The soup was delicious too, with lots of noodles and a soft, delicious matzo ball. Prices were quite reasonable, significantly cheaper than the Kosher Nosh for nearly comparable quality. (Most meat sandwiches are $7.95, and the soup was $4.50 for a pint with one matzo ball.) I hope that they can keep the prices this reasonable for the long haul.

The place was full of the traditional Jewish deli specialties: kasha varnishkes, smoked salmon, etc. The staff had a Jewish vibe too. If it weren't for some of the dairy menu offerings and the dessert case offering tons of definitely dairy cake slices in the front, you'd swear this was a glatt kosher deli.

There aren’t many (any?) Jewish style delis in this area of Bergen County, so this place definitely fills a void, kosher or not. I will definitely be back.
