Northern Oregon Coast: Long Review of Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Wheeler

I just wanted to report back on our trip along the coast earlier this week. We had asked for some suggestions, and I wanted to let you all know our report. Unfortunately, in general, it seems that we were a little early in the season, and a little off in our timing so that many restaurants (at least the better ones) were not open. We were there this past Sun. to Tues. night, and basically none of the higher rated places were open.

So, here is what we did try out.

We went to Pelican Bar & Grill in Pacifica Bay, and despite a lot of raving about this place on the Board, we were not impressed. Even the beer, which I am guessing this place is most well known for, was not so good. I had Heferveisen (of course I have no idea how to spell it), and it was a bit warm, and too sweet. I had the chili which was not hot enough, and my husband had a burger, which was fine but super thin, and the fries were definitely not fresh.

We stayed in Manzanita which is a wonderful place, and we stayed at Coast Cabins (which I would highly recommend -- They have recently been redone and are great). Unfortunately, the Blue xxx restaurant was closed while we were there so I think we missed out. There was a decent expesso and news place -- the coffee was good but the pastries were not so great. For dinner, we checked out Normas in Wheeler, which unfortunately, was really not good. I had linguine with clams, and I couldn't eat it it was so tasteless, and the clams did not seem fresh. Even our shrimp cocktail seemed as if it had been frozen. My husband had a pizza and so I nibbled off of that, but it was also not so great. Very nice and prompt service though.

We also had lunch that day in Cannon Beach at Susan xxx which had outdoor seating. It was very pleasant, but again the food was dull. No one recommended this place, it is definitely just a tourist joint. I had a quesadilla, and my husband a turkey sandwich and both were bland, and my quesadilla was super greasy (the chicken was oozing).

Lastly, and our best meal, was at the Bistro at Cannon Beach. It was fine. The salads were tasty with good blue cheese. My husband had halibut in some kind of crust which he loved, and then a strawberry with zambiglione sauce which he also loved. My meal was not so exciting. Noodles with scallops and shrimp. The fish seemed fresh, but the sauce (a thai curry) was a bit heavy.

We finished up the day with smores in our fire -- delicious as always.

The coast itself was gorgeous, and beautiful, and we loved everyone we met in Oregon. Many thanks for the recommendations, and hopefully on our next trip back we will time it better with those well regarded restaurants.
