Nothing to do with the prosciutto wrapping, I'm sure. '-)
Sorry it's the only picture I took before cooking (and eating!)them. But they were gorgeous.
The asparagus out here mostly comes from one farm out by Orient and they do know how to grow them ;-)
Coll: Curious: Do you mean Latham's? Sep's? Maybe we should compile a list of which stands have the best of each particular vegetable and fruit.
Since I'm lucky enough to live out here (Riverhead area), I DO always go to certain stands for certain items. Rottkamps for corn, Schmidts for spinach, Lewins little barn (not the grocery store) for eggs, Bayview for tomatoes and duck...can't say it's not a nice ride!
This is only the little farm on Mill Rd, down from Home Depot in Riverhead. Usually when Schmidts has spinach, they sell it too; but the farmer wasn't at the stand as usual so I didn't get any good gossip ;-) He always gives me the lowdown.
Since it looks like a nice day, maybe I'll take a ride later and see what Bayview etc have listed on their signs, to jog my memory. About a week ago it was only horseradish I think, and most farms just said Opening May 1. Mother Nature does seem to be getting up to speed now, at least based on my little home garden.
coll, do you deliver? Might be a real money maker.
We just got back from a quick tour, Baiting Hollow to Cutchogue on Main Rd and back on Sound Ave. Asparagus was the only constant. Harbes isn't even opening until Saturday. What everyone had was flowering plants and potted herbs/vegs. For some reason I saw a lot of signs for sorrel too. A couple of places had signs claiming LI tomatoes, must be hot house (up and coming out here).
The only other thing I saw is the new mushroom farm on Cox Rd in Mattituck/Cutchogue, they are open to the public now. I'll report back in a few weeks, when we can actually compare "the best" ;-)
It's Lyle Wells I believe. Not even sure he sells asparagus retail, just that he grows it.
I was trying to look it up and ran across this website by J King, lots of info on what and when http://www.grapesandgreens.com/LI_Jer...
Jealous! Meanwhile, my Stop and Shop on Main Street East Northport has asparagus, definitely NOT local, at $3.99/lb, limp, laying on its side in a puddle of water.
Another supermarket joining Waldbaums at the bottom. Looks like more long trips to Fairway in Plainview and North Shore Farms in Commack.
Bayview has had local Spinach and Asparagus for a couple of weeks now. According to The East End with Doug Geed on News12, Lyle Wells i the main grower as Coll mentioned.
Condzella also grows Asparagus, and White Asparagus. Last year the white was about double the cost of the green. Their website says they're selling since late April.
I finally realized the gate to get in Condzella is on 25, not the back road. I will try to pop by there soon!
Wells Homestead in Aquebogue also has Asparagus. I forgot since it's been so long since I had it, last night and tonight :-)
Tonight we had spinach from Schmidts; a spinach salad with bacon and feta, and a frittata with spinach and mushrooms. Ha, now I'm hoping I don't get kidney stones, happens every spring after I pig out ;-)
I just ate and THAT'S making me hungry again!
Condzella's is just a driveway with a small house on the left and a couple of plastic greenhouses on the right leading to a barn. You can see it street view google maps on North Country Rd. They've built an addition to the left of the barn, before that it was just a refrigerator in the barn and leave your cash in the box.
Bayview now has local Rhubarb and Leeks as well. Condzella has green, purple and white asparagus. Will have the white tomorrow night. They were $7. last year they were 10...
Breaking news: Riverhead Internet Post (R.I.P.for short)reports that all of the North Fork Farm stands have been bought by Trader Joes. They will be numbered like the exits on the LIE and State parkways.
In other news: I just had a 14 sneeze fit. When will the rain come and wash away all of this tree pollen.
South Fork farm stands bought out by Ralph Lauren.
That is all.
