Norman Restaurant & Bar | Skyview Motel - Los Alamos

Melanie Wong | Jun 11, 201807:01 PM

Dinner options in Los Alamos are fairly limited on Wednesday nights. Norman Restaurant & Bar in the newly renovated Skyview Motel is new and one of the few places that is open. I was alerted that it had a recent chef change but I still wanted to check it out. The restaurant is named after the character in the Bates Motel.

With only one table occupied in the restaurant around 8pm, I opted for a seat at the bar instead.

This current menu that was handed to me is completely different than what's on its website. And the price level is about 30% higher than the online menu.

To celebrate Negroni Week, I started with the named cocktail, $13. Sweetness dominated and I asked the barkeep to adjust it.

Taking a conservative tack in ordering from a new chef, I stuck with small dishes. My first choice, market ceviche made with halibut, turned out to be sold out when the server put my order in. He returned to ask if I'd like something else. I inquired about the market soup,$8, that after checking with the kitchen, turned out to be mushroom. The soup was a thick puree enriched with a dollop of dairy and fresh herbs. It was very concentrated and deeply flavored. In the current fashion for plating, this was presented as a half-full bowl. Maybe five fluid ounces of food?

My server had asked me if I would like water. I said, "Yes, please." Despite reminding him two more times, I never got any. But he was very friendly and seemed like he was interested in his job. Open for less than three months, perhaps more time in grade for the kitchen and wait staff will work out some of these jitters.
