New Nordic Food at the Munchies Festival on Hester Street

small h | Sep 17, 201703:05 PM

On a day too hot to eat seafood chowder, I did exactly that. The festival had many of the usual suspects one finds at Hester Street on any given Saturday - Pizzeria Moto, Burger & Lobster, Baohaus - as well as a special "Nordic Area" with booths both selling food and giving it away. The folks handing out smoked salmon and cheese got wise to us freeloaders pretty quickly and stopped refilling their sample trays, but it was still possible to snag some excellent bread and butter or a little cup of weird grain mush as the afternoon wore on, accompanied by a shot of some khaki liquid that I'm sure was very healthful. There was a beer (and liquor) garden too, where you could, if for some reason you wanted to, sample the world's only non-alcoholic gin. I thought my $12 would be better spent on a sea buckthorn colada made with Skotlander Rum. Where else can you get one of those? (Maybe everywhere. I've never looked.)
