Nominations - Home Cooking Dish of the Month: September 2017

masha | Aug 19, 201711:52 AM     113

Welcome to the Nominations thread for the September 2017 Dish of the Month. For those unfamiliar with the Home Cooking Dish of the Month (“DOTM”), our community selects a particular dish for each month. Over the course of that month Hounds cook the dish and report on the results, as well as exchanging comments and tips as we perfect those results. The purpose of this thread is to collect ideas of a “dish” (defined below) that we will be cooking in September.

For August we’ve been making Salsas as reported here, https://www.chowhound.com/post/salsa-.... There are still 11 days remaining in August, so please continue to make Salsa and contribute to that thread.

What should we cook during September? Should we select a dish that capitalizes on seasonal produce available from our farmer’s markets and home gardens? Or, perhaps, a dish that complements upcoming holidays and celebrations – like the Jewish High Holidays, Mexican Independence Day, or Okterberfest (which begins on September 23). Let’s be bold and select a dish that pushes us outside our comfort zone to learn to make something unfamiliar.

**What Makes a Dish**

A dish is loosely defined as an ingredient and a method of preparation. “Chocolate” or “beef” are not dishes. “Chocolate mousse” or “beef stew” are. You don’t have to be terribly specific; you can just nominate “tomato soup.” You don’t have to say “tomatoes chopped and simmered over low heat then puréed and poured into a bowl,” For some dishes, both the ingredients and the technique are implied, such as cassoulet or jambalaya.

** Please Don’t Nominate Dishes that already have been Prior DOTM Dishes**

DOTM just celebrated its 5th Anniversary this past month. Over that period we’ve already cooked 62 different dishes (because we did 2 in April 2016). We want to avoid selecting a dish for September that is a repeat of a dish done before. You can view the index of dishes here, http://www.chowhound.com/post/links-h.... You are invited to make any of these dishes, and contribute to these threads at any time.

**How to Nominate or Second a Dish**

When you are ready to nominate a dish, or to second another’s nomination, please type the dish in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. Nominations are counted by how many times they are written in capitals, so if you’re discussing a dish without nominating, or after nominating, please type it in lower case. Each Hound may nominate as many dishes as he/she likes.

Nominations will be open until Friday, August 25, 2017 at 8:00 PM EDT (5:00 PDT and 2:00 am on Aug 26 GMT). After the nominations close, the dishes with the most nominations will move on to the voting thread where every person gets only one vote. Once the votes are tallied, the winning dish will be announced and there will be a thread where everyone can post reports and photos.
