Nijiya Market now open in SF Japantown

Gary Soup | Nov 1, 200309:59 PM     9

Having a little time to kill in Japantown this afternoon, I wandered by the defunct Maruwa Market site. Nijiya Market, its replacement, was open and abuzz with shoppers, although no signs had been put up outside to indicate its presence.

I had never spent a lot of time at Maruwa (we shop in Chinatown and purchase mostly Chinese ingredients), so I can't really make a detailed comparison of Nijiya's offerings with Maruwa's. However, Nijiya appeared to have a wider variety of of imported and exotic packaged fare (perhaps at the expense of fresh produce and staples) than its predecessor. Prices at Nijiya appear to be lower, too.
