One night in Guaymas

I was in Guaymas this past weekend for a job and had a chance to get out for a little of the local seafood.Guaymas is known for its shrimp and cahuamanta(manta ray soup).I knew about Los Arbolitos, a highly recommended seafood chain located in the state of Sonora, but wanted something different.

Our driver turned us on to La Cobacha, which was close to our hotel and was a great open space under a giant palapa.Many locals were there watching the baseball game and cheering very loudly.

Shrimp was on my mind, and I did satisfy this urge.I ordered a queso fundido cooked with shrimp inside and made spicy by chiltepin peppers.I forgot what they called this on the menu but it was delicious.A friend also shared some of his oysters and clams(chocolates) which were fresh and excellent without condiment, and I had a taste of someone elses aguachile.This was good but not the best I've had.

For my main course I was fortunate to have ordered the "mignon de camaron", a dish I first encountered in Mazatlan this past year.It's shrimp formed into a filet mignon, held together by a strip of bacon, and covered with chihuahua cheese. This version also was adorned with mushrooms.Some grilled vegetables and a mold of white rice was served on the side.

Other members of my party ordered the pescado sarandeado, campechanas, and other shrimp preparations like camarones rancheros.We were all very pleased with this restaurant and got out for less than $20 a person with several micheladas each.They have an extensive menu of seafood dishes and even some of their own creations like the shrimp queso fundido with chiltepin, using local shrimp, cheese and chiltepin, the definitive chile of Sonora.

Now I have to make room for some cahuamanta next time.
