Visited this new spot near Town Center Mall last night. It's in the plaza with Five Guys, Hooters, and Gyroville.
Wife and I thought it was terrific.
Layout is very open and inviting, lots of brick and wood if I recall. Nice classic rock in background (not too loud) keeps things lively. Several manager types walking the floor, staff all looked attentive, friendly, fast-moving.
Greeted by friendly hostess promptly, attended to by server promptly, They have nice draft beers (inc Sierra Nevada) and a selection of New Haven sodas.
We ordered the Rhode Island clam chowder - it's like Manhattan w/o the tomatoes - so it is clear. Loaded with clams potatoes and some bread strips, Wife thought a touch salty but may have been just because that's the very first thing she tasted basically all day. I thought it was very good, and I've been a clam chowder aficionado for a long long time. I saw one post elsewhere where someone said they ordered this and it had "nothing in it". That's crazy because this was a huge portion and loaded with clams and vegs.
Wife had arugula and shaved fennel salad with orange sections, this was okay but not spectacular. Large portion for sure but I guess the dressing and/or seasoning did not add make for any bold flavors.
We then ordered the signature dish, White Clam Pizza with Bacon and Garlic. We've never had anything along this line so that would be a new experience.
It was really terrific. The pies are well done (ala Anthony's) so the crust is nice and charred on the edges but good and crispy elsewhere. This is a thin crust so when you take a bite of the clam/bacon/garlic pie, wow. Sort of like eating a really good plate of Linguine and Clam Sauce, without the Linguine.
We will be back to try more traditional red sauce pies very soon. Maybe tonight!
We dined at around 5:45PM on Friday night and this large restaurant was already very lively and almost full. I think it's going to be a big hit, I can see monster lines here in season.
Final note, I posted that I was there on Facebook and I guess that white clam pizza sounded so good, within a few hours several of my friends had changed their plans and said they were headed over to Nicks.
