Nice surprise -- Trackside, Ramsey

Had birthday dinner for a 23-year old male tonight at Trackside in Ramsey. What a perfect place for two guys, their mothers and grandmother. It's sports bar enough for the guys (no coats and ties) and restaurant enough for the others -- comfortable seating with enough table room, attentive server, and, surprise, really good food. Filets with grilled portobello done as asked; chicken Sorrento huge and nicely done; salmon to birthday person's specs; crab cakes with Dijon sauce not over-sauced. Mashed potatoes were good; mixed fresh julienned vegetables perfectly cooked.

A spoonful of the birtday guy's brownie sundae was enough to tell me that the Charley Brown sundae (that awful thing that has a frozen brownie in at the bottom)is not the model. This had a warm brownie at the bottom and warm chocolate sauce on top and was delicious. The apple crunch, even with apples not yet in season, was surprisingly good, too. Grandma got the goods complete with whipped cream, ice cream, and a raspberry-sauced strawberry on the side. We all shared.

Great dining, no. Very good, unpretentious place, yes.
