A month back, I asked SF Hounds for recommendations for a fine dining spot near Union Square. The consensus response was "Cortez." The small plate format has not caught on in the Washington DC area, so the experience at Cortez was new and fun. The food, however, was unremarkable and the service was rushed--with waiter and bus competing to clear serving dishes before we had finished the course. On the walk to Cortez,we came upon COLIBRI,a Mexican Bistro. We ate there the following night. The setting is up-scale. The guacamole, made table-side, was world class, the pork and chicken dishes were thoughtfully seasoned and deserts were memorable (try the rice pudding). Service was professional.
