I have recently tried a few places at lunch that I thought were worth mentioning. First one is Mama's Po-Boys on Hilcroft just south of Richmond. I had the Falefel Gyro and it was great. It might sound weird but it reminded me of a new orleans fried oyster po-boy. The falefel had a nice crunch to it and it also had some lettuce, tamato, and was dressed with some louisiana hot sauce and paprika. This is the only item I have eaten at this restaurant.
I have also dined at Jenni's noodle house near downtown and had the Infernal Chicken dish. I can't say how addicted I am to this dish. It is chicken and potatoes in a cocunut broth. Very spicey! I have also tried the super fried rice at this place and it is very good as well.
I recently stopped by El Rey Taqueria and Coffee on Wash and Shepherd and tried the "Cuban" taco. The taco was filled with meat, black beans, sour cream, and plantains on a tortilla. This puppy was tasty. I have also had the acapulco sandwich and highly recommend it to anyone along with the chicken tortilla soup.
All three of these places are mom and pop stores that serve a different type of item from the normal restaurant that you would place in it's respective sub category. Please give them a try and let me know what you think.
