Nice Afternoon Tea at the Windsor Arms

On a whim this afternoon we called the Windsor Arms at 3 to see if they could squeeze us in for their 3:30 tea. (I definitely recommend reservations!) They had just enough room to fit the 2 of us in. However, the In Laws heard we were going and wanted to join us, so while the staff was accomodating when we arrived (late b/c we had to pick them up), they couldn't fit the 4 of us in the main Tea Room. Instead, they seated us in a bar/lounge area just off the Tea Room which was actually very nice, modern and peaceful. I was happy to sit there. (Note: a couple of girls arrived later, just before the 4pm cut-off and were put off by the fact that they were being seated in this lounge area rather than the traditional area. The Windsor Arms seats the tables in the Tea Room 'first come, first served' w/ a bit of overflow, so if you want to be in the Tea Room, arrive on time for the 3:30 start.)

We ordered Full Tea for 3 of us and the Cream Tea (smaller tea service) for my MIL and it was more food than the 4 of us could eat. I think 2 and 2 would have been enough food for 4 -- and my husband and I hadn't eaten lunch beforehand. The tea itself was very good -- we ordered everything from English Breakfast to Morrocan Mint. The Cream Tea included the tea, some petits fours and 2 scones (1 currant, 1 plain) and the Full Tea included the aforementioned items plus savory sandwiches (asparagus/cream cheese, smoked salmon and grilled chicken) and some savory tartlets which had some kind of cheese and carmelized onions, though all I could taste was the onions. I thought the sweet items were a bit better than the savory. But the sweet tartlets/scones were very good and the Devon cream was great. Then strawberries with cream was served after the tea. We were so stuffed at this point it made me think of the restaurant scene in Monty Python's 'The Meaning of Life'. :-P

Our server was good, starting off so/so and improving with time (I think he had too many people to attend to at the start, then more time once everyone was settled with their tea). The hotel staff in general was wonderful, and we thought they were very accomodating to squeeze us in, set a beautiful table in their overflow room and react very nicely when we called en route to tell them we were adding 2 more. I know that's not easy on the staff, but it would've been harder on us to tell the In Laws they couldn't come! Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and we will definitely go back.
