Nha Trang is a restaurant at 1611 2d Avenue (not 2d Street) at the start of Foothill Boulevard near Lake Merritt in Oakland. It looks forlorn and deserted from the outside (and is somewhat hard to find), but it has a charming, funky shaded outdoor terrace with a spectacular view of the lake from every seat. I was willing to put up with somewhat ordinary food in the past because I loved the space, plastic flowers and all.
I was in the neighborhood this Saturday, and stopped by. The sign now says "New Nha Trang," and there is a menu with actual English translations. The dinner menu has a lot of exotic things like deer, at what seem to be relatively substantial prices ($20 range). The lunch menu, on the other hand, was really inexpensive for what it was: I had a large bowl of vermicelli and salad (real salad - not iceberg lettuce) with a good serving of imperial roll and barbeque pork for $6.95 and my husband had a good beef pho for the same price. The quality of the food is now up to the surroundings, and makes it worth finding this place. (Another plus: friendly, welcoming service.)
There was only one other person having lunch at 1:00 on a really spectacular day, so this place probably needs some support.
