Ngoma review - interesting African food on Wilshire

I believe we've mentioned this place before, but I wanted to recommend it again as it seems so empty at lunchtime. Ngoma is on Wilshire near La Brea and specializes in West African and East African food, which is different from the Ethiopian food commonly found in this neighborhood. My friend tried the lunch buffet ($6.95, I think). The choices were a very tasty chicken curry dish; a sauteed cabbage and carrot and potatoes dish; rice pilaf; a dal-ish lentil dish and black-eyed peas. It's kind of like Indian food meets soul food. I ordered off the menu, which is the same at lunch and dinner, with dishes between $9 and $13 or so. I had the curry tilapia fish with collard greens and a big ball of polenta-type cornmeal called ugali. You pinch off a bit and dredge it in your curry. The fish was a bit sparse and bony but the curry sauce was very flavorful. There are some other more unusual dishes with ingredients such as green banana, fufu (mashed yams), crushed melon seed and dried crawfish soup, etc. The decor is very nice with wicker chairs, carved wood safari napkin rings, etc. and it has an "A" health rating.
All in all, an interesting, reasonable place to try when near LACMA, the El Rey Theater, etc. which seems like it could use some support. Service was on the slow side but very friendly.
