I've been away for five weeks - just noticed that the Steinway Bakeshop (in Astoria) is gone. This is a real blow - in a neighborhood with clone Italian bakeshops on almost every corner (albeit mostly pretty decent), Steinway had the most individual profile. They made great donuts, coffee cakes, pies, and even croissants. Their cream filled donuts were deservedly praised a couple of years back in a NY Times donut article. I will miss them sorely.
Where butter made the difference indeed.
