Just got back from Newport and thought I'd post about my experiences. Dinner the first night was at 22 Bowens - Had the fillet, which was excellent. Don't miss the fantastic rolls they serve with dinner - they had dried cranberries and what looked like oats, and were warm and quite tasty. Lunch the next day was clam chowder at the Black Pearl - loved it. Perfect balance between creaminess and not overly rich (don't you hate those chowders that congeal even while you're eating them?), loaded with clams, and served with home-made tasting crackers on the side. Dinner that night was Scales & Shells, which I had mixed feelings about. We started with the fried calamari, which was good but nothing spectacular. Oddly, they charge a separate $1.95 for the marinara sauce that comes on the side, even though we didn't ask for it. Also had a garden salad to start, which was fresh and crisp but quite small. For an entree we shared the Labster Fra Diavolo, which was very tasty but poorly named. What you get is really a small lobster, tons of mussels, a few clams, and lots of calamari over a little pasta. Wish our server had told us the last bit and we would have ordered a different appetizer, since we were sick of calamari at that point. I think they should more aptly call it a "seafood fra diavolo, featuring lobster" or something similar, given that there was significantly more of the other things than there was of the lobster, and for $60 I was expecting a hefty lobster portion.
