Newport Eats - Cafe R & D for lunch, Taco Mesa for dinner

Cafe R & D - I have always had great food here and had only tried the salads up to this point. Unfortunately, my favorite Steak salad, with the tastiest & most tender filet Mignon, is now off the menu. Felt they were expensive, but worth it. I've somewhat changed that feeling after lunch there on Saturday. We ordered 2 Bloody Marys & 2 of their very famous French Dip sandwiches that we have heard so much about. My Bloody Mary was so bland I exchanged it for an ice tea. The sandwiches were $15 each and came with nothing other than the jus - no fries, no slaw, no nada - I was thinking this really better be good. They were good, but only after some doctoring as not much taste - needed salt & pepper & horseradish slathered on. I really liked the toasty butter grilled bun and the beef was tasty, but in little chunks more like shredded/chopped carnitas, instead of roast beef slices, so chunks of the meat kept falling out into the jus. Don't know if I'd do this again at that price, but (I think I'm) glad I tried.

Dinner at Taco Rosa - have always had great food here & Saturday night no exception. My only complaint was all the screaming kids on the patio, but my husband reminded me someone was probably complaining about ours a few years back!! Great frozen margarita which, BTW, is best to order blended, as the on the rocks is in the same large martini-like glass with lots of ice, so not a whole lot to drink. Blended lasts much longer... He had the crab enchiladas, which were fabuloso - all crab filling, nice sauce, slices of avocado on top, sweet corn tamale with it's own sauce on the side. I had the blacked calamari salad, which was very good & huge as always & I slathered with 2 kinds of salsa from the salsa bar. Before our entrees came, we were presented with a complimentary appetizer sampling - escabeche, a potato dough something topped with grilled vegs & a mini chimichanga with sauce - all yummy. I love going to that salsa bar & loading up on more escabeche to munch on while you wait for your food. Ordered a full burrito meal to take home to the now not so little one and our whole bill with 3 margaritas & 3 full dinners & the complimentary appetizers was less than our 2 sandwiches, ice tea & Bloody Mary at lunch. And the people that work here are really really nice - just a great place that you should check out if you haven't already!
