Nellie's Soul Food - Oakland

lainielou | Jun 17, 200511:41 PM

Hi all -

Just had a great fried chicken dinner at Nellie's. I would not have known about this place if it weren't for this board. It was very good. I had fried chicken, my boyfriend had smothered steak and our waitress, who was frazzled beyond belief just kept bringing sides. When we would tell her that we didn't order it, she would just say, "baby, just eat it 'cause I don't even know what goes where tonight!" They had a twenty top on one end of the restaurant and a twenty-two top on the other - it was insane! We barely got seated right before these two groups and although it was still relatively early - 6:45 or so, they were sold out of all the days specials as well as mac & cheese. The fried chicken was hot, crispy and had the slightest spicy bite at the back of the mouth - really quite perfect fried chicken. The smothered steak was also very good - tender and well seasoned. The sides we had were: blackeyed peas, collards, mashed potatoes and gravy, rice and gravy, potato salad, green beans, pinto beans and corn. All very good - eventhough the green beans were canned, they still were prepared with some love - I live almost right around the corner from The Southern Cafe which in it's own right has pretty decent Soul Food, but I must admit that I'd still drive across town to go to Nellie's! Oh, and I usually dislike corn bread but their corn bread muffins are baked in big cast iron molds so they are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside - really, really tasty. Great sweet tea, too. Service was scattered because of the two parties but all in all very friendly.
