Nellie's in Oakland

yimster | Jun 12, 2005 08:25 PM

Following the recommedation of this board four of us tried Nellie's for lunch. I was thinking Nellie would be a place my wife would have loved it. Since it is her sister name (I wish she could cook this good).

We ordered four dishes and shared among the four of us.

Fried Chicken all dark meat two drumsticks and two tights. Found the chicken to moist and crispy on the outside. One of the best I have had in recently.

Fried Oysters, fresh cooked just right. Remember me of big belly clams. Juicy and crispy.

Pork neck bones, tender but not falling off the bone. I think this will be one the first dishes we will have to do soon.

Fried Catfish, nicey done but was our least like by the group. There was "muddy" taste. There was only six strip not a lot to eat. The only dish I would not order again.

Since there were four of us, we were able to order all eleven sides so that we could tast them all.

Rice and gravy, they used the pork neck bone gravy. Rich and nice

Mashed Potatoes, again with the rich pork neck bone gravy.

Greens, a wonderful side. the leaves had a sweet after taste while the stems had a little bitter taste and when you combine both in a forkful you get a wonderful blend of both.

Green bean with boiled potatoes, canned beans but the additional of boiled potatoes added body to the dish and enjoyable.

Sweet potatoes, canned but sweetened with honey and good, a little too sweet but good.

Potatoes salad was good with some chopped sweet pickles and the pickles added a lot to the side.

Corn, just butter and least like of all the side by me.

Black eye peas, I am not a fan of black eyes peas but these had a lot of flavor cooked with salted pork.

Cooked Red bean, tender but not mushy. But again I not a fan of beans.

French Fries, freshly done frozen fries.

Side salad a very nice salad fresh lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion and canned beets with dressing we got Italian but there was a choice of three.

The only dessert was a nice fresh made peach cobbler.

Cost with a nice tip was less than 20 bucks each.

Also got two small corn muffin each. Hot and freshly baked.

I would order three of the four dishe again if I am in Oakland again
