Over on the New England Board, we've been having some discussion of Clam Chowder. I'd mentioned having some that was seemingly dairy-free a few years ago in Maine, and another individual wanted to know more, being a Mainer and having never seen it that way.
I know I've seen recipes that skip milk/cream like what I had, and thought that I'd seen mention on TV.
Googling through several dozen recipes, I did find one or two that omit milk/cream.
Did I just run across an oddity? Is there precedent for non-dairy chowda? Does anyone else know more about the history of chowda?
