Nava Thai report

potrzebie | May 19, 2008 07:09 PM

5 of us enjoyed a superlative dinner at Nava Thai in Wheaton. I had read reports here that it may have surpassed nearby Ruan Thai. The same 5 of us last ate together at Ruan Thai, just 2 blocks away, and we had a superlative dinner there, too. Our favorite dishes at each are quite different from one another, so I'd say it's an apples & oranges comparison. Ruan's dishes tend to pack more heat, if that's an issue one way or the other for you. Though they're only about 2 blocks apart, I'd say they're easily the two best Thai restaurants in suburban MD.
I particularly recommend the following dishes at Nava Thai: #23 under appetizers, the Twice Cooked Duck Salad, described as Deep fried duck, then tossed w/veggies in a chili lime sauce. #38 - Penang Curry. This was simply the best Penang curry I've had anywhere, a wonderfully flavorful red curry served with a dollop of coconut cream. #51 - Shrimp Pot (under House Specialties) - reminiscent of Vietnamese caramel noodles, this dish includes shrimp, vegetables, & bean threads, in a flavorful caramel sauce. #12 - Crispy Mussels - crispy pan fried battered mussels, served with hot chili red sauce. I've never had mussels prepared in this way.
