After passing by for too many years, last week I finally stepped inside Natura Vida, the Mexican version of a health food store. The lady who runs it is quite charming and eager to be of service. The shelves are stocked with food supplements, herbs that can be purchased in bulk, and associated products. In addition, she has a menu of shakes, smoothies and juices as well as low-fat sandwiches and salads. There are a handful of tables for enjoying them on-site.

I tried the Super Nectar de Nopal, $3.99 for 16 oz. that was juiced and blended to order. The mossy green beverage had plenty of fiber. The grapefruit, papaya, and honey smoothed out the vegetal tartness of the cactus. A cleansing and refreshing mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
