Nanaimo bars in the Bay Area

Ruth Lafler | Jul 16, 2002 02:12 PM

Does anyone know of a place in the Bay Area that makes Nanaimo bars (named after the Vancouver Island town where they supposedly originated)?

I found several recipes, mostly I'm just curious to see if this regional treat has made it this far south. I just polished off one I bought in Ashland, OR, but the woman behind the bakery counter there was shocked that we knew what they were and how to pronounce them (nah NAI mo).

Although there are variations, basically a Nanaimo bar is layered bar cookie made with a chocolate/graham cracker/coconut bottom layer, a vanilla/sugar/custard layer (with about the consistency of an Oreo center), and a pure chocolate top layer.
