Twice within a short span of over a week, I decided to pay a hefty premium on gasoline cost and venture afar from Richmond Hill in order to pursue some delicious food. This time, my pick was the Japanese own and run ‘Nakamori’ in Scarborough. Based on past experience, this is a place I feel confident with, that will offer us consistently good, creative and interesting Japanese fusion fare. With an Omakase that features both, well proportioned, hot and cold, cooked and raw dishes, the tasting menu would fit my wife’s preference exactly! As before, I opted for the $60, 5 course menu instead of the more extravagant $120, 7 course one. The latter, in my opinion, a lesser value-for-money option. Besides, if we are to find ourselves still have room left towards the end of our meal, we can always order addition dish (s) from the a la carte menu to fill up the gap!
Braving rush hour traffic, we arrived at the restaurant at 6.00pm for an early dinner. Since we already pre-ordered our Omakase dinner when we made our reservation, dishes started to arrive almost immediately after we settled into our private tatami booth.
Tonight, our chef’s tasting menu consisted of the following:
- Appetizer of Fish Ceviche Taco, Hairloom Tomato Caprese Salad, Spicy Tuna Croquetta
- Ginger Seafood ( Salmon, White fish, Scallops, Prawns, Clam ) Miso Soup.
- Charbroiled, medium rare Angus Striploin, thinly sliced and topped with wasabi, soya sauce on rice.
- Duo of Fried Crispy Wasabi Tiger Prawns and Spicy Jerk Chicken thigh.
- Sushi platter of Saba and Hamachi rolls; Salmon, Maguro, Scallops, Anago and Uni Nigiri.
- Dessert of Green tea Ice-cream, Green Tea Tiramisu; Mixed Berries.
As expected, the majority of the offerings were quite creative and delicious. The standout being the multi-textural profile, cold appetizer trio…with the Spicy Tuna Croquetta the most enjoyable. The greaseless and ultra-crunchy Wasabi Prawns plus the well seasoned Jerk Chicken came a close second. Only mis-steps, IMO was the overly salty soya sauce used on the striploin steak. It literally overwhelmed and destroyed the taste sensation of an otherwise perfectly cooked piece of steak! Sigh! I sincerely hoped my advise to the chef to tone the sauce down did not fell on deaf ears?! Time will tell!
The shari used for the Nigiri, though nicely seasoned, was also a touch too ‘ soggy ‘ ….a miss in my book!
Overall, it was a very enjoyable meal and at only $60 per person, excellent value for the number of courses and fine ingredients offered. By the way, service was most attentive and friendly. Our server, Simon was a joy to interact with!
Such a pity this place is so far from our home! Sigh!
