The Mystery of Goi Banh Cuon

mudaba | Dec 20, 200702:33 PM     7

Years ago, when living on 86th and Columbus in New York, I would frequent my local (very small) Vietnamese restaurant called Saigon Grill. I always ordered a dish called "goi banh cuon." As time passed, Saigon Grill moved locations and grew and grew, but they always had their special goi banh cuon, and I ate there so frequently that I was never exposed to other Vietnamese restaurants. So it was a startling wake up call when I moved from New York to the west coast, where I've searched for goi banh cuon time and time again (and in other cities across the US) to no avail. Goi banh cuon does not exist. It seems to be something that only Saigon Grill of NYC (the now-evil Saigon Grill, who treats their delivery people very badly) offered. The dish was made of thin, flat rice noodle crepes laid on top of those crunchy pickled vegetables, with meat or shrimp laid on top. Is there anything else that approximates this dish? Has anyone else fallen in love with the elusive goi banh cuon?

Insight much appreciated. Meredith
