Mystery fruit

I need help identifying a fruit that I had many years ago (maybe 30). I've looked for it in reference books and can't find it. My impaired memory goes like this:

It might be classified as a berry, pinkish-orange-red, about the size of a walnut (a bit smaller perhaps) pumpkin shaped and deeply crenulted. Very pretty. The skin is like that of a tomato (the same color as the flesh) but it would be very difficult to peel. I seem to recall large black seeds. A very distinctive flavor: bright, sort of tart, unusual aftertaste. Thanks in advance. pat
